What are upset stomach relief medications?

Upset stomach relief medications, known by their technical name of antiemetic medicines, are a family of medications that are designed to relieve nausea and vomiting caused by numerous conditions. What many people call an "upset stomach" is usually a form of viral gastroenteritis, nausea can arise as a negative response to a medication, as a result of morning sickness during pregnancy, motion sickness or as a reaction to general anesthesia during surgery. Ultimately, in only extremely rare cases, is nausea and vomiting a sign of a serious or life-threatening medical condition, and will typically clear up quickly with medication.

The most common upset stomach relief medication is bismuth subsalicylate, which is the active ingredient in common OTC medicines like Kaopectate and Pepto-Bismol. Bismuth subsalicylate works by coating the inside of the stomach to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea by limiting secretions in the digestive tract, reducing inflammation in the stomach and intestines and inhibiting the growth of specific bacteria and viruses that can be the source of intestinal issues (Medical News Today).
