What is orthodontia wax?
Orthodontia wax is a disposable wax substance meant to be placed over orthodontic materials like braces in order to protect an individual's mouth, cheeks and gums from the harsh edges of the orthodontic materials. Mouth irritation from braces is very common and orthodontia wax can cover the braces' sharp edges and create a smooth surface that prevents irritation (Salem Dental & Orthodontic Associates).
Orthodontia wax is safe to use as often as desired. It's best used in small, pea-sized balls that have been removed from the larger supply and then firmly applied over the braces.
Orthodontia wax is often flavored, though not always. Other ingredients that may be included with orthodontia wax includes vitamin E and aloe.
Orthodontia wax is often necessary because of irritation that can be caused by braces. Braces are necessary for proper tooth alignment in many individuals, including children. Braces often have to be worn for months or years in order to complete their alignment of the teeth. Because of the length of time braces may have to be worn, relief from products like orthodontia wax can be incredibly useful and helpful.
Orthodontia wax is a dental product that does not contain a medical ingredient, and therefore it is eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare plan. Orthodontia wax is Over-the-Counter (OTC) and does not require a prescription. Orthodontia wax can be purchased at many drug stores, grocery stores, dental supply stores, etc.
Orthodontia wax is also often called orthodontic wax or ortho wax. It's made of medical grade parafine wax. It's also often sold in small containers that are portable.
