What is a Forehead Thermometer?

There are two types of thermometers that can read temperature from the forehead. One type is called a forehead thermometer strip, liquid crystal thermometer, or temperature strip. This forehead thermometer contains liquid crystals within a plastic strip that will change color when held next to the forehead. Temperature changes cause the crystals in the forehead thermometer to change color. The color indicator is accurate within 0.1 degrees Celsius. The second type of forehead thermometer is also called a digital temple thermometer. The temporal artery is a major artery of the head, and the blood temperature is read by the digital forehead thermometer by swiping the device across the skin of the forehead. The temporal artery is located close enough to the surface of the skin to be ready accurately by the forehead thermometer. This method of temperature reading is considered relatively noninvasive, quick, and easy to use (Mayo Clinic).

Several manufacturers sell forehead thermometers that work digitally, and they may come with a variety of features such as memory recall, color coded guidance for temperature readings and fevers, hygienic designs that do not require covers for use, and more. Digital forehead thermometers require batteries for use, as they are electronic devices. Digital forehead thermometers are Over-the-Counter (OTC) medical products eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account.
