An electric scooter with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). An electric scooter is not eligible with a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA) or a limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA).

What is an electric scooter?

An electric scooter is a mobility product designed to help an individual retain ambulatory autonomy despite a physical weakness or debilitation as a result of a medical condition or disease that otherwise prevents them from normal access to their home and environment. An electric scooter is essentially a self-powered wheelchair. It may be used by individuals without any ability to walk, or with a reduced ability to walk or support themselves, or heavy fatigue.

A very common disease that reduces an individual's mobility, for which an electric scooter may be an appropriate medical product, is multiple sclerosis.

Electric scooters require a battery and the battery must be charged in order to power the scooter.
