Finding a caregiver for a child, elderly adult or another qualified dependent is a long and involved process to check the qualifications, medical history and professional acumen of a prospective caregiver, who will need to demonstrate a degree of competency and kindness so account holders can feel comfortable leaving their loved ones in his/her hands.

Aside from these important considerations when making a decision to hire a caregiver, some potential clients may request a physical exam for a caregiver before beginning their position looking after a loved one. The thinking behind this is that the caregiver must show that he/she is physical capable of performing the rigorous demands of the job, as well as identifying any potential health issues that could put both the caregiver and the dependent in danger if something were to go wrong.

In most cases, hospice care and caregiver organizations will require their employees to take a physical as a prerequisite to being hired and to showcase to clients that they can handle the demands of the position. However, in some cases, a prospective client may request a physical exam of a potential caregiver, but because these individuals are not spouses or dependents covered by a consumer-directed healthcare account, they would not be eligible for reimbursement with an FSA, HSA, HRA, LPFSA or DCFSA.
