Essential Oils (for medical care): HSA Eligibility

Essential Oils (for medical care): requires a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) to be eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)
Essential oils for medical care may be eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) with a Letter of Medical Necessity from a medical professional. Essential oils for medical care are not eligible for reimbursement with a dependent care flexible spending account or limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA)

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are oils infused with scents that are claimed to have different healing properties. These oils are used in aromatherapy, a form of homeopathic medicine.

How could essential oils treat health issues?

While there is no definitive proof from studies, essential oils are thought to have healing properties associated with stimulating your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long-term memory  (The National Center for Biotechnology Information).

Some conditions essential oils are thought to treat include headaches and migraines, sleep and insomnia and inflammation (Healthline). The IRS has provided limited guidance on holistic medical treatment and the success and safety of essential oils has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. That said, the IRS has indicated that in order for an item to constitute “medical care”, it needs to meet the definition of medical care but does not necessarily need to be effective as a treatment. With proper documentation such as a Letter of Medical Necessity from a medical professional, it may qualify for reimbursement as indicated above.
