Weighted Blanket: HSA Eligibility
Weighted Blanket: reimbursement is not eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)What is a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is just like any other blanket you’ll find on a bed, but is constructed with plastic pellets to add weight, usually between 4 and 25 pounds and users will choose how much weight to utilize based on their own height and weight. Weighted blankets have gained popularity in recent years for their role in treating anxiety, insomnia and a wide range of other sleep disorders. Additionally, weighted blankets have been used for decades in psychiatric care.
While some individuals have found success in treating sleep issues with weighted blankets, further clinical trials are still needed to test their efficacy as a means of treating a specific medical condition. In rare cases for certain disorders, they may be eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), but are generally considered not qualified medical expenses by the IRS (WebMD). Always speak with your benefits administrator if you’re unsure of whether an expense type of this will qualify.
