Viagra: HSA Eligibility
Viagra: eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)What is viagra?
Viagra or Sildenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is considered one of the standard treatments for erectile dysfunction, the inability to sustain a satisfactory erection to complete intercourse. There is also some evidence suggesting that viagra may help men who experience antidepressant-induced erectile dysfunction, and improve some risk factors for high-altitude pulmonary edema.
Sildenafil acts by inhibiting cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that promotes degradation of cGMP. Essentially it relaxes muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body, like the penis. While viagra can help you have an erection when sexual stimulation occurs, taking a pill does not guarantee an erection (Medical News Today).
What are some side effects of viagra?
Common side effects include headaches and heartburn. If you have a cardiovascular disease, minimal or cautionary use is advised. Other rare but serious side effects include prolonged erections, which can lead to damage to the penis, and sudden-onset hearing loss. Do not take viagra if you are taking nitrates such as nitroglycerin, as this may result in a severe drop in blood pressure (Everyday Health).
How should I take viagra?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Typically, viagra is taken only when needed, and about 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. You should not take Viagra more than once per day.
What are some things to be careful about with viagra?
Avoid drinking alcohol with viagra as it can cause side effects. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may also interact with sildenafil and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid using any other medicines to treat impotence, such as alprostadil or yohimbine, in combination with viagra.
