What is sexual counseling?

Sexual counseling, also commonly referred to as sexual therapy, is a type of couples' therapy that aims to get to the root of sexual issues and other related problems that could be placing undue stress on an individual's relationship. While the subject matter may stray outside the norms of traditional marriage counseling, sexual counseling is conducted by trained therapists who are trained in psychological methods of treatment for sex and relationship goals. Much like other forms of therapy, these sessions will typically include taking an inventory of the couple's sexual history and formulate goals to gradually improve and solve these issues over time (Everyday Health).

Sexual counseling is a common experience for many married and unmarried couples alike, as over time, couples may find that their sexual needs can begin to change or drift apart. One of the most important roles of sexual counseling is identifying the factors that can alter a partner's sexual desire, such as stress, aging, family issues, career and social commitments or even an underlying health issue. These sessions can be conducted one-on-one as well as with both individuals present to work through emotional or relationship issues that may be contributing to sexual complications.

How do I obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) for sexual counseling?

A LMN for sexual counseling is necessary for reimbursement with most benefits providers to ensure that it is necessary for the treatment of a medical condition. This letter must outline how an account holder's medical condition necessitates sexual counseling, how the treatment will be used to alleviate the issue and how long the treatment will last. If the treatment plan exceeds the current plan year, another LMN will have to be provided to the benefits administrator to cover the duration of the treatment.
