What are Epsom salts?

Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate, an inorganic compound that is highly soluble in water. Epsom salts are used in hot water bathing for the soothing of aches and pains. Epsom salts are absorbed by the skin, and magnesium plays a role in regulating several enzymes in the human body, reducing inflammation, supporting muscle and nerve function, and preventing hardening of arteries. Sulfates help support the absorption of nutrients in the body (Epsom Salt Council).

Epsom salts are normally used by dissolving them in a hot water bath, then soaking for an extended period of time. The salts help to prevent some degree of pruning in the skin.

Epsom salts are usually recommended by doctors for bathing use for sore muscles, aches and pains. They may also be recommended for other applications including oral consumption (for constipation). When prescribed, Epsom salts should only be taken or used in the dosage indicated. When taken with a bath, Epsom salts are absorbed through the skin to bring the magnesium and sulfates directly into the muscles and circulatory system. This makes it application for muscle aches and soreness more effective (WebMD).
