Cold Plunge Tub: HSA Eligibility
Cold Plunge Tub: requires a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) to be eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)What is a Cold Plunge?
A cold plunge is a small pool or tub filled with cold water, typically between 50°F and 59°F (10°C to 15°C), used for therapeutic purposes. It is designed to help reduce muscle inflammation, speed up recovery, and improve circulation by exposing the body to cold temperatures. Often used by athletes or after saunas, cold plunges trigger vasoconstriction and stimulate the nervous system, promoting mental clarity and physical recovery. Sessions usually last a few minutes.
Research on cold-water immersion has found evidence that it helps reduce the degree of exercise-induced muscle damage that can occur after physically challenging activities. Less damage leads to less inflammation, which in turn reduces soreness and helps restore physical performance the next day.
These benefits may be the result of rapid constriction of the blood vessels due to the cold water. The cold can trigger responses in your body, such as decreased metabolic activity, alterations in hormone production and blood flow, and activation of the immune system. (Mayo Clinic)
Cold plunges may be eligible for reimbursement with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed healthcare provider showing that the cold plunge tub is primarily for the treatment or mitigation of a specific medical condition. A cold plunge for personal use or general good health is not eligible.
