Chair, Specialized or Ergonomic: HSA Eligibility

Chair, Specialized or Ergonomic: requires a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) to be eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)
A specialized or ergonomic office chair that treats a medical condition may be eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) if you obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a healthcare provider. Specialized or ergonomic chairs are not eligible with a limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA) or a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

Can I buy an office chair with my HSA?

You may be able to buy a specialized or ergonomic office chair with your HSA if you have an LMN from a healthcare provider stating that the chair treats a medical condition.

Which accounts cover a specialized or ergonomic chair?

A health savings account, flexible spending account, or health reimbursement arrangement may cover a specialized or ergonomic office chair if a healthcare provider recommends it to treat a medical condition in an LMN.

How do I get a Letter of Medical Necessity for an ergonomic chair?

You can get a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a medical professional either through an in-person office visit or via telehealth.

What should my LMN for an office chair include?

The LMN for the office chair should include:

  • Your information – name, date of birth, address, contact info

  • Provider information – name, credentials, contact info, license number

  • The date

  • The medical diagnosis, including duration and history

  • Why you need an ergonomic chair to treat your medical condition

  • How the treatment will be used to treat the issue

  • How long the treatment will last

  • The provider’s signature

Does the chair brand or model matter for HSA eligibility?

No, the office chair brand and model don’t affect HSA eligibility. Any ergonomic chair may qualify for reimbursement with an LMN from a healthcare provider showing that the chair is used to treat a diagnosed medical condition.

How do I pay for an office chair with HSA funds?

To purchase an ergonomic office chair with pre-tax dollars in your health savings account, you’ll need to pay out of pocket and reimburse yourself later.

When reimbursing yourself, keep an itemized receipt of your purchase and the LMN. The receipt should contain the date of the purchase, the item, the retailer, and how much you paid.

Are massage chairs, lift chairs, and standing desks HSA eligible?

Massage chairs and standing desks aren’t eligible for HSA reimbursement because they are generally not used to treat a medical condition.

Lift chairs may be eligible with an LMN from a healthcare provider.

HSA eligible back support you can buy without an LMN

Back support items that are HSA eligible without an LMN include:

  • Lumbar support: These products, such as pillows and cushions, support the lower back.

  • Back brace: The braces provide stability to the back to help with recovery from injury.

  • Heating pads: Heating pads can help relieve back pain by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow.
