What are fever reducing medications?

Fever reducing medications are any medication that can be used for reducing a fever or treating its symptoms. Fever reducing medications can include Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications as well as prescription-only medications.

Fever reducing medications include off-label and generic products such as naproxen, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and more. Name-brand product equivalents such as Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Tylenol and others are also considered eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account as fever reducing medications so long as a doctor has prescribed them. Sometimes the treatment may include multiple types of fever reducing medication to be taken in conjunction with each other.

Fever reducing medications work in a variety of ways to reduce the actual fever temperature and/or alleviate fever symptoms. Some fever reducing medications work by preventing the body from allowing itself to raise the temperature towards a fever (Mayo Clinic).

Fever reducing medications are typically prescribed in conjunction with other measures to reduce the fever, including rest, application of wet and cool towels, fluid hydration, and more. Some types of fever, especially those caused by heat or certain types of infection.

Fever reducing medications should be taken with care and according to a doctor's specific instructions. Some fever reducing medications can be used more safely in alternating doses of multiple medications, to lower the possibility of overdose or to mitigate potential side effects.
