What is spinal decompression? 

Spinal decompression is a form of therapy that is used to treat chronic back pain where traditional therapies and strategies have failed. The central idea behind spinal decompression therapy is that the spine will be stretched using a variety of medical devices, such as traction boards, door-mounted traction devices or motorized devices with the overarching goal of alleviating back, leg, neck and nerve pain (WebMD). 

What is spinal decompression used for?

Spinal decompression therapy makes use of a series of spinal traction devices that are designed to stretch the spine and alleviate pain in a variety of joints. They are particularly helpful in treating conditions such as bulging, degenerating or herniated discs in the spine. This therapy has two main benefits for those with these conditions. First, it will relieve inter-disc pressure between the affected areas, which can promote the retraction or realignment of these discs in their normal positions. Finally, this eased pressure on the area can promote improved blood flow to this area which can speed the healing process (Spine-Health).

Other medical conditions that could be assisted by spinal decompression therapy include sciatica and neck pain, worn spinal joints and injured/diseased spinal nerve roots.
