Ileostomy Supplies: HSA Eligibility
Ileostomy Supplies: requires a prescription to be eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)What’s an ileostomy?
An ileostomy is a surgical opening made in the abdominal wall that is connected to the lower part of the small intestine, forming a stoma, which becomes the new location to pass digestive excrement.
The colon and rectum are typically removed during this surgery, meaning that waste can no longer pass through the anus as normal. A pouch is attached to the patient’s stoma, or opening consisting of the lining of the small intestine, which allows the patient to collect waste.
Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, familial polyposis, and cancer are all conditions which may result in needing an ileostomy (American Cancer Society).
