Human Growth Hormone (HGH): HSA Eligibility

Human Growth Hormone (HGH): requires a prescription to be eligible with a Health Savings Account (HSA)
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is eligible with a prescription for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). HGH is not eligible with a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA) or a limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA).

What is Human Growth Hormone (HGH)?

HGH is a hormone found naturally in the body produced by the pituitary gland that plays an important role in contributing to a person’s growth, body composition, cell repair and metabolism (WebMD).

When would I need HGH from a medical professional?

A person with a deficit of HGH would need to be administered the hormone. As a person ages, the pituitary gland slows down the making of HGH, which is a natural occurrence that would not constitute taking extra HGH.

HGH is helpful, however, for those who have trouble producing the hormone on their own because of conditions such as a tumor on the pituitary gland. HGH is also used to treat those with AIDS/HIV-related muscle deterioration (Mayo Clinic).

How is HGH abused?

HGH is often abused, with patients obtaining unneeded prescriptions from medical professionals and also buying it in non-FDA approved products from various sources.

The risks of taking HGH when you don’t need it are plentiful. It can result in increased insulin resistance, carpal tunnel syndrome, swelling in the body’s tissues, numbness and tingling of the skin, high cholesterol levels and for men, fat around the breasts (WebMD).
