What is First Aid Cream?

First aid cream is a substance applied to wounds or lesions to kill germs and promote healing. First aid cream is designed to stop or prevent infections from occurring. First aid creams are considered an antiseptic. First aid cream may be used for burns, scalds, small cuts and wounds, scratches, and abrasions. First aid cream will allow the skin to heal naturally, while preventing infections from interfering with bodily health and with healing in the specific area (LIVESTRONG).

Some first aid creams may also have an antibiotic component such as benzalkonium chloride, a pain relief component such as lidocaine, and/or a component designed to in dermal regeneration (healing). First aid creams may have a base of beeswax or petroleum or other types of cream substances.

First aid cream is most commonly found in a tube dispenser with a screw-on cap, but individual packets of first aid cream may also be purchased. The latter are more commonly sold for use in doctor offices and hospitals.

First aid cream is typically designed to be applied and then covered with gauze or a bandage, then fixed in place with a medical adhesive.
