What is denture stain cleaner?

Denture wearers have to juggle a wealth of responsibilities to ensure that their full or partial dentures are properly maintained, but quite possibly the most important task is ensuring they are clean and ready for each use. Proper denture cleaning is vital for both the health of the dentures and the wearer's mouth, and establishing a regular cleaning regimen with denture cleaning supplies can prevent unnecessary spending on denture fixes and eliminate bacteria buildup (Mayo Clinic).

However, if this maintenance regimen slips and stains are allowed to form on the surface of dentures, something stronger than daily denture cleansers will be needed to remove these imperfections without harming the structural integrity of the dentures. Denture stain cleaner is the step up from standard denture cleansers that can remove years of accumulated, calcified plaque and other stains that have become embedded in dentures.

How does denture stain cleaner work?

Denture stain cleaners are available in powders, gels and tablets, and while they are similar to standard denture cleaners, they contain higher concentrations of whitening ingredients and cleaning agents to remove embedded stains from the surface of dentures. To use these denture stain cleaners, perform the following steps via GSK:

• Brush surface of dentures: Start by soaking the dentures in water and brushing them with a nonabrasive denture cleaner to eliminate food particles and bacteria. Never use toothpaste on dentures as many of these products can be abrasive and may cause damage to the surface of the dentures.
• Soak dentures overnight: To tackle major stains, add denture stain remover to 1/2 cup of warm water. Place the dentures in the water glass and allow them to soak overnight. This will ensure that the active ingredients can work to remove surface stains and restore the original color of the dentures.
• Rinse dentures in the morning: It's important to rinse off dentures of any existing stain remover and cleaners before they are placed back into the mouth. Denture cleaners are not meant to be ingested, so any trace of this material left on the dentures could cause health issues if they are swallowed. A thorough rinse in the morning and a once over with a denture brush to remove any excess material will ready the dentures for daily use.
